βIt has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.β
β Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
Our little ones are sometimes overlooked. Why? Well, they can’t knock you over. They aren’t taller than you. They don’t bellow or bark baa or whinny. They are subtly sweet and gentle – and frail – creatures and require the most careful treatment. So often relegated to outdoor hutches or tiny cages, small mammals are the step-children of the animal world. They have the highest euthanasia rate at animal shelters.
But… did you know…
- Rabbits nose-butt you when they like you?
- Guinea pigs purr when they are happily being petted.
- Chinchillas hate being held but love flying through the air.
- Rabbit can jump straight up into the air when they are happy.
- Guinea pigs cannot manufacture Vitamin C – just like humans. That has resulted in their being used in medical experiments π
- Chinchillas take dust baths to clean themselves.
We want to celebrate these fascinating and lovely creatures. Please keep these little ones in your hearts and minds when you donate or think about adopting.
Please think about making a contribution to Star Gazing Farm to help us give the best care possible to our little ones!
Here are some rescue organizations local to the Maryland area who help the small ones where you can adopt!
