Politics on the Farm

4 October, 2004

I'm sure all of you are, to some degree or another, talking and wondering about the upcoming election. The nice thing about farm life is that the only politics normally involve who gets to the new hay bale first. But is it such an innocent existence?

A few months back I attended a meeting of people who are trying to help keep the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve intact. I picked up a bumpersticker that read "No Techway." A few days later I noticed it had been largely scratched off the back of my truck. I imagined nefarious would-be Potomac River commuters in Safeway parking lots wielding nail scissors working away at this while I shopped...

Then I discovered the awful, awful truth. Not only is he pro-development, Mr. Newman Goat is a Republican! He has been spotted not only by me, but by the horse and at least one sheep, furtively chewing at my anti-Bush bumpersticker. This particular bumpersticker reads "More trees, less Bush".

It pains me no end to think that Newman would be more comfortable living in a McMansion on clearcut land bought with Enron stock funds and driving a Humvee. I'll be conducting an official elections poll at the farm in the next weeks and remedial brainwashing, ah, I mean political education, will ensue.

Until next time,

Farmer Anne
