Turkeys: Herman, Haruka, Hiraku
Herman: Bronze turkey
Haruka and Hiraku: White turkeys
We adopted Herman and Mr. Bill, two male bronze turkeys, from Farm Sanctuary (in New York) in November of 2005 as part of their Adopt-a-turkey program for Thanksgiving. Mr. Bill passed away in October of 2007, leaving Herman alone and feeling bereft. In December of 2007 we therefore adopted two baby boy turkeys, Hiraku and Haruka, to be Herman's new friends.
Unfortunately these turkeys have been bred to grow unusually fat, unusually fast to satisfy the meat industry, and so keeping their weight down is a constant struggle. They are very animated creatures who make a wide variety of lovely noises; they also love to imitate noises such as the roar of the tractor or people laughing.
