Hawthorne
Dutch Warmblood/Hanoverian
Born approximately 1993
Weight approx. 1400 pounds

Hawthorne (nicknamed "Bello" and "Big Boy") was intended to be a serious dressage horse, but his owners found that he had an old (healed) fracture to his navicular bone that caused him to go lame from time to time. They loved him very much, and wanted him to go to a place where he would be coddled, so they chose Star Gazing Farm!

Hawthorne is, indeed, a big boy, standing at 17-1 hands and weighing an estimated 1400 pounds. He is a gentle giant, though. He is very tolerant of the sheep and goat shenanigans that go on, doesn't flinch when the puppy races through his legs, and leads very nicely. He's brought some much needed leadership to the farm; after his predecessor Lucy died, there were power struggles amongst the larger animals, but with the arrival of Hawthorne his quiet dignity makes everyone behave much better. His one foible is that he is so tall and his neck is so long, he reaches over the garden fence to munch on the herbs.

Care:

FOOD
Hawthorne is fed a high protein and high fat diet, supplemented with oat bran and beet pulp, as he needs to put on about 100 pounds. He is fed twice a day, and gets as much grass and hay as he likes. He's very, very fond of carrots.

OTHER
Hawthorne is seen by our farrier, David Phillips, once every six weeks.

MEDICAL
Hawthorne will be seen soon by our vet Dr. Haley Kostinas to determine the best course of shots and treatments for him.

HOUSING
Since Hawthorne is so tall, we had some concerns about his fitting into the barn, but he does just fine, and often he'll hang out with all of the other animals in the very same stall! He is never locked in a stall - he can come and go out, as he pleases.
